There is hardly ever a need to pre-release the mirror because the mirror movement is braked before the end of travel. Nevertheless pre-release of the mirror is possible however it is more comfortably be done with the electric cable release that has separate buttons for ‘ Mirror-Up only’ and (‘Mirror-up‘ +) Shutter Release’. In that case a tripod is used anyway. Note also the Exposure Compensation Switch and the mechanical SE (Single Exposure) / ME (Multiple Exposures) switch that can disengage the film transport.
